Curatorial Manifesto

Everything has an inside story.

CUTAWAY ATLAS is an independent interactive educational website exploring mechanical engineering. We dismantle, dissect, and document the silent mechanical choreography operating inside everyday objects.

Why Everyday Mechanisms Matter

Modern consumer technology intentionally conceals its function. Glass smartphones, sealed injection-molded appliances, and cloud services train us to treat physical utility as magic. When an object operates without visible moving parts, we lose our understanding of mechanical cause and effect.

Yet our civilization remains anchored in brilliant mechanical design: the cam that rotates when pushed to latch a ballpoint pen; the interlocking scoop teeth of a metal zipper; the detached lever escapement dividing the continuous release of a mainspring into precise horological seconds; the magnetic flux driving a loudspeaker cone; the hydrodynamics of a toilet siphon; and the friction traction and mechanical safeties protecting passengers in a skyscraper elevator.

Independent Educational Initiative & Commercial Nature

CUTAWAY ATLAS is not a registered public museum, an academic faculty, a nonprofit foundation, or an accredited standards body. It is an independent web publication created to provide accessible, rigorous technical education through interactive cutaways, patent history dossiers, and vector animation.

The project is offered freely to visitors and is designed to support ethical online advertising in the future to sustain research and hosting costs. Every interactive exhibit is built natively using standards-compliant SVG and modern web techniques, without proprietary plugins, external tracking networks, or deceptive popups.
